The TORWAVE processor extends the capability range of commercially available thermal processing equipment.  To date our TORWAVE pilot plant has been used mostly on food stuffs, including Cacao, Coffee, Malt and “popped” snacks. In addition to food, it has been used to dry minerals, “loosening” water on the inside of particles and bringing it to the surface, allowing significant water removal with less impact on the material than would be the case with conventional heat. Next steps will see further testing on food and minerals and tests on catalysts, pharmaceuticals and other fine chemicals. Below are:

Catalyst Processing

TORWAVE processors offer smarter catalyst regeneration, lower emissions and extended catalyst life.  Its microwave-based capabilities have the ability to regenerate catalysts more selectively than conventional thermal methods. The result is the potential for lower energy consumption, reduced catalyst degradation and an all-electric route to decarbonisation.

TORBED has over 20 years of experience drying difficult industrial sludges. TORWAVE extends this capability through high-temperature microwave processing, enabling efficient pyrolysis and supporting PFAS destruction, biochar production and energy recovery.

Mineral Processing

Unlocking more value from mineral resources.

Our TORBED processors deliver intense thermal processing for challenging mineral applications, from creation of vermiculite to flash calcination to flash processing of clay at 1500ºC, expanding the art of the possible. The TORWAVE takes this further, extending our capability across the thermal range adding selective microwave heating of refractory ores and strategic minerals and volumetric heating.

We sold our first commercial TORWAVE for use as a pilot plant for a mineral drying application. Instrumental in discussions is its ability to heat volumetrically and remove water from the centre of particles at a lower ambient temperature than would otherwise be possible, avoiding overheating of the exterior.

Carbon Processing

More efficient carbon activation and regeneration.

Our processors provide fast, controlled thermal treatment for activated carbon, biochar and torrefaction processes while supporting the transition to lower-carbon industrial operations. Microwave heating in the TORWAVE configuration addresses the central thermal challenge of these applications. Reactivation requires temperatures of 600 to 900 °C in a porous, low-conductivity material, and volumetric microwave heating has the potential to deliver this far more efficiently than conduction from a hot wall or hot gas.

Food Processing

Forty years of industrial food processing innovation

Torftech sold its first TORBED processor for a food application in 1987. Over forty years and a hundred processors, we have refined our industrial food processing. Many of these machines are all-electric, offering decarbonisation solutions. The TORWAVE processor extends the range of all-electric possibilities. For example, tests have shown that the combination of volumetric and conventional heating can produce “slow roast” coffee in seconds, saving time and energy, reducing emissions and extending the range of industrial coffee roasting technologies.
