TORWAVE: Reducing Carbon Emissions Through Commercial Gas (Carbon) Substitution

The TORWAVE processor cuts industrial CO₂ facilitating commercial gas substitution through two interlocking mechanisms: electrification and process intensification. Each is powerful on its own; together they form a uniquely effective platform for decarbonizing process heat.

Electrification addresses the largest unabated source of industrial emissions — combustion of fossil fuels for heat below about 1000 °C. TORWAVE’s microwave energy delivers volumetric, inside-out heating drawn from renewable electricity, eliminating Scope 1 combustion CO₂ entirely. Unlike conventional fluidized-bed gasifiers, no carbon is consumed simply to generate heat. Microwave input can be blended with electric resistance or hot-gas heating in hybrid configurations, and fast start-up and turn-down allow demand-following operation on intermittent renewable grids. Because heating is decoupled from fluidization gas, product streams remain undiluted by combustion N₂ and CO₂, yielding higher-calorific bio-syngas, higher-grade calcines, and contamination-free specialty products. When partial oxidation is used, the resulting concentrated CO₂ stream makes carbon capture and storage genuinely practical.

Process intensification attacks the energy demand itself. The TORBED platform within TORWAVE achieves very high heat- and mass-transfer rates through jet-driven toroidal circulation, with short, tightly controlled residence times and no inert bed inventory consuming heat. The compact footprint reduces standing losses and embodied carbon in steel and refractories, while volumetric microwave coupling eliminates wall-driven heat-transfer bottlenecks. Modular numbering-up avoids the energy penalties of oversized single trains, and tolerance to fine, sticky, and wet feeds cuts upstream drying loads. The net result is lower kilowatt-hours per tonne of product, regardless of how the energy is supplied.

The two levers reinforce each other. Electrification cleans up how energy is delivered; intensification reduces how much is needed. Together, on the proven TORBED platform, TORWAVE delivers the smallest possible electrified load on the cleanest possible grid — a bankable, deployable route to decarbonizing hard-to-abate industrial heat by commercial gas carbon substitution today.
